If you're talking about submerging the tailgate in a tank of coating and having the coating attracted to the metal electrically you're in for a major shock when you see costs.
The process is pretty much only cost effective when done on a production basis such as at a car assembly plant.
Costwise you'll probably be way ahead with a lanolin based treatment that you can do yourself either with a couple pounds of lanolin and mineral oil & paint thinner or with one of the many products based on lanolin. There's a $27 word for the process but I don't recall it.
