I'd get a tommy that is as wide as the panel. No reason it shouldn't work just like your sample.
That said, ten years ago a friend gave me a pick-up size hydraulic lift that is all under the truck, except the gate itself. No corner posts to contend with. I've had it on two trucks, and before I got it it had been on at least two others. Real handy- adjustable height work bench, and with a 'shoe' on the end of a hitch, I use it as a tire busting machine.
When I moved it to this truck, I built brackets so it bolts to the Ford. Next time, no welding/fabricating needed.
Only down side is that the spare won't go underneath any more. Somebody did steal one out of the back.
But I don't see many around, in pick up size.
