It depends on how the turn signals are wired in. On earlier vehicles they often ran a separate set of lights for the turn signals and they are not hooked into the brake lights at all. Often they just tapped into a hot wire, installed lights front and rear and the turn switch.
It was not until later when turn signals became mandatory did they get integrated into the brake lights. Even today some Japanese vehicles do not have integrated turn and brake light systems.
