My bleeding system is to run a clear tube from the wheel cylinder into the MC and pump until I can't see any air anywhere in the tube. It usually works well. Free play is about 1" before any contact at all. I know the trick with it not backing off enough to clear the release port in the MC, so I tend to keep them on the loose side. I really thought the issue was too much play in the wheel cylinders but after adjusting all the shoes, I don't think so. At some point I know I'm going to have to pull all the drums off and figure out what's going on in there, though.
