When you say "play", do you mean the shifter handle can me moved all around while in a gear?
You very likely have excessive wear in the slot in the shifter ball. Take the shifter handle out and examine the ball that is up inside the shift cover. The slot should be a nice clean rectangular slot. IF it isn't have it welded back to shape and get a new pin that fits in to the slot.
