Windings rarely fail open. What usually happens is that a couple of adjacent turns short out due to the varnish wearing through, usually due to softening from heat. With one shorted turn in the coil, you hardly notice it, but as more turns short out, it gradually gets hotter and hotter, less powerful, and more noisy. Usually the brushes start sparking too. It's a gradual process and it's obvious that something's wrong, due to the heat and sparking. If you haven't seen those sorts of symptoms, it's probably not the windings.
