Throw-out brg holds shaft laterally?

I think the forks on the shaft are close fits to the throwout bearing, and shouldn't move laterally when everything in is actual functional position. I also THINK you can get a peek at things from underneath with the tin cover removed, and from above with a round cap pried off of the bell housing?
