What they enjoy doing now, in Colorado, is before a storm hits, they spray down the roads with a liquid solution of Magnesium Chloride. This is supposed to melt the snow as it hits the road preventing packing and ice formation. It does seem to work as long as it doesn't snow too hard. It sure leaves a mess on your windshield and after about two days you can't tell a red car from a white one.
