flat heads have no oil in head, so head gasket won't cause oil in coolant- only water into oil (past rings).In fact I don't think that the oil galleys share any walls with the water jacket-theres no place that a crack can cause oil to be forced into the water. Are you sure it wasn't caused by contamination of coolant? (this oughta stir up some discussion)
