try disconnecting one spark plug at a time,then rev it .When you make the noise go away , you've found the bad rod (probably #6 0N THE FLAT HEAD MOTOR)

Re: penny advise-Ithink you got it backwards. A highly polished shaft(worn smooth) won't transfer copper, a shaft in good shape will still be rough (freshly ground)and will transfer copper (like a file). The ground surface holds oil better.
