Rear Shock Mount Question

I have friend that has a set of rear shock mounting plates for the rear axle and then the plates for the frame. As an alternate app can you take off the front axle shock mounting plate, from a spare chasis, and use them on the rear? Then all you would have to do is come up w/mounting on the frame. Anyone tried this?
