I don't know what type of metal the crankshaft is. The Army technical manual TM 9-1840A (engine & clutch manual) just says that crankshaft is drop-forged high-carbon steel. This doesn't help much.

As for RC hardness, I don't know what the best hardness would be. Most automotive gears (used in tranny's, rearends) and roller type bearings are typically in the range of RC 55 - 65. I don't know if this would be appropriate for a crankshaft, though. It might be too hard.
