For smaller tank size compressors you should consider a two stage. I have a 60 gal/230 volt/5 hp/single stage compressor that isn't any better than a 25 gal/110/4.5 hp/two stage compressor that I was able to borrow for awhile before I owned mine. The two stage design airs up fast, so while it may cycle more often with the smaller tank, it runs less due to the two stages and the smaller tank. My 60 gal is only just adequate for my needs, I have to let it rest once in a while if I'm doing lots of cutting/grinding/sanding as I can't bring myself to just let the thing run too hot. I also have an auxiliary fan blowing on the pump cylinders so that they continue to get airflow when it's not running, this helps keep the temps down.
