Best 4V carb for offroad seems to be the Quadrajet. They may be a little more difficult to set up to your engine, and there are better versions than others, but the 4X4 mags basically agree that the Quadrajet performs the best over the range of conditions a 4X4 experiences. I don't have experience with the Thermoquad. Next choice for me after the Quadrajet is the Carter AFB. Absolutely not a Holley.
Fuel injection is nice but it is expensive and if something craps out, well... A carb can be cleaned out on the trail, can be fed via gravity if pump(s) fail, etc. But for extreme angles, injection's got carbs beat hands down. Another consideration, which is a big one for me, is altitude compensation. My use of 4X4 vehicles is from 5000 feet altitude to 10-11,000 feet. Even running a pressure regulator that I turn all the way down when up there in altitude, she's running rich. I would like a dial-a-jet kit for automotive carbs like there is for motorcycles.
