Old sizes are "100 series" aspect ratio: section width equals height from rim to tread. So, a 7.50-16 is nominally 7.5" wide, 7.5" high, so it's 7.5 X 2 + 16 = 31" tall. Actually, most 7.50-16s or 7.50R16s are really about 8' wide and 32" tall. My 8.25R16s are 8.9" wide and 34" tall.
Replacement sizes for
7.50-16: 7.50-16, 7.50R16, 235/85R16
7.25-16: 7.00R16, 7.00-16, 7.50-16, 7.50R16, 215/85R16
8.25-16: 8.25-16, 8.25R16, 255/85R16 (only 33.3")
The metric sizes are wider, only 85% as tall as they are wide, but will usually fit on the same rims.
The variance in sizes can be significant. Most 9.00-16 military style NDs are 35", but some are 34", and most other 9.00-16s and 9.00R16 XLs are 36", but 9.00R16 XZLs are 37". A 9% variation in diameter.
