I have seen some old machines that essentially used what you're describing as a permanent key. They drilled a hole down the seam and put a rod in it. Might have been a tapered hole and a tapered pin. Lots of 19th-century machines used tapered pins and tapered shaft fits because lathes were the most accurate machines they had. A lot of things were "made to fit", so in a setup like you're describing, the drilled hole doesn't even have to be perfectly aligned to the seam if you don't need mass-produced interchangeable parts. Just drill the hole a few thousands undersized (that's why a number drill set is handy), drive a hardened pin (save the good rollers from all used roller bearings) into the hole and you're set.
