Someone recently opined that grade eight bolts were too brittle to be used on suspension brackets.
I took a grade eight bolt and bent it over more than 90 degrees. No obvious signs of failure. When I tried to straighen it out, it failed at about 45 degrees.
I took a grade 3 bolt and bent it back and forth between zero and 90 degress several times. No failures. Obviouslly, the grade 3 bolts are more flexible than the grade 8 bolts, but given that the grade 8 bolt was able to withstand a more than 90 degree bend, I don't think they are too brittle for suspension work. Otherwise, what would be the point of grade 8 bolts?
I made the bends on the unthreaded portion of the bolts. When I made the bends in the threaded portion of the bolts, even the grade 3 and 5 bolts failed on the first 90 degree bend.
