If you're cheap like me, you can keep not only the 6 volt starter but also the 6 volt generator and just change the regulator to a 12 volt unit. The regulator won't be real happy with the situation, and the generator might not put out quite like it should, but it will work. On the other hand, any 12 volt alternator you have laying around can be made to fit and might also be free. Please don't fry your 6 volt gauges by "trying" them at 12 volts. It seems like everybody has to find out for themselves that it burns out the gauges. It's easy to drop the voltage to 6 volts for the gauges.
