Switched a 51 B3 about 8 years ago. Have since upgraded to an alternator and added circuits and fuse box.
Needed for 12V:
- 12V battery.
- 12V generator (not sure about regulator).
- all bulbs need to be 12V.
- 12V to 6V reducer (get a good one) for fuel gauge circuit (needs to go between ammeter and fuel gauge).
- reduction resistor for heater fan motor(if you have one).
- wiring is sufficient IF it is in good condition (it probably is not).
- switches can carry 12V, no need to replace.
- starter can handle 12V, but it will heat up faster.
- horn is OK to run 12V.
You can get a NOS wiring harness to replace rotten wiring. 6V wiring is actually larger to handle more current, so it will handle 12V.
If you are going to add circuits (lights, turn signals, etc.) I recommend getting an aftermarket wiring kit with a fuse box. You might also want to covert from +ground to -ground.
