there are hundreds of years of oil left, if we would be willing to look. if we committed to doing it safely, we could blend petroleum with plant based sources and stretch the supply. currently, we praise other countries for their efforts to drill for oil, (in the case of brazil, we loaned a multibillion dollar oil company to deep water drill, but shun domestic sourcing. if we did simple things like create one blend of fuel and build more refineries we would be doing ourselves a favor. george bush 'suspended the blend' after katrina and prices dropped dramatically. the refineries have to stop production to make the diff blends & then those blends need to be transported, adding cost.
i believe that there is no magic bullet to the energy problem, but i do know that oil is and should be part of the solution. in reality, what is wrong with a car or light truck that got 50+mpg? that would dramatically reduce fuel consumption and emissions.
we are currently choking diesel engines to reduce greenhouse gas. my megacab gets terrible mileage compared to the previous version. what is better? having to run a 1/3 more diesel through my truck so it is clean?
