The older VW diesels are a different breed, the op manual even says for better starting in cold weather to mix up to 50% gas, mileage will suffer, but it will not harm the engine.
The other extreme - a quart of gas in a 500 gallon storage tank would result in brunt nozzles and eventually a ruined engine in certain older Allis Chalmers diesels. Don't ask how I know.
