Sounds like the Sprag T-case on the older M35s. It has something like a coaster bike clutch inside it, and gears to drive the rear 8% slower than the front. Normally the front is kept moving by the friction with the road, but when the rear starts to spin and goes as fast as the front, then the clutch engages and the front axle drives too. Not sure what the problem was with this, but they got rid of it and went back to a manual-engaging T-case. Too clever for its own good I suppose.
