Yes, a carbide plant blew up and will not be back in production any time soon if at all.
No this does not mean a shortage of acetylene gas since most is currently made using a process I G Farbin, now known as BASF due to some inconvenient history, developed in the 1920s to refine acetylene from natural gas.
Production from natural gas is far less costly.
