I remember when I was a kid, going to an auction with my dad and seeing acetylene generators that used carbide and water to make acetylene as part of a gas welding/cutting setup. I wish we would have bought it. Of course, I suppose sourcing carbide might be tough.

Just wait, if the EPA has their way and classifies fly ash as hazardous waste, electricity will get expensive fast. RIght now it is still a marketable by-product, but thanks to the TVA, that should end soon also.
