I have used different terms to describe these early leaves - tapered, grease groove, split main, etc. Your term "swallowtail" fits real well.

I like the old springs. The double "military" wrap is a nice reinforcement feature around the eyes, the grease groove is handy if you are inclined to keep them lubricated, and the split main leaf does allow the spring to twist more easily during "cross-up" conditions.

The springs are still "one-ton", however they were just the first and lightest duty used on the 1-ton Power-Wagon - used until serial number 83920916 (front) and 83904967 (rear) - rated at 1110lb. front and 2500lb. rear. My B3PW has the heavier rated springs - 1600lb. front and 3000lb. rear.

My WDX does ride much better than the B3PW.
