John Deere corn head grease has worked great for me in my stock steering box. What really makes it nice is no leaks, and it appears to lubricate things well.
Yes, it has been reported that modern h.p. gear lube like you find on all auto parts store shelves is bad for brass bushings.
For that reason I also use a special winch lubricant from Lubriplate. From Phil's archives:
