OK. I've reassembled the third member and doing the checks. With the pinion and ring gear engaging at center of ring gear tooth to approx. 60% depth I can get a backlash of .006+. The ring gear side bearing adjuster sticks out about three to five thread widths, while the opposite side is nearly flush.
