First thing is to check the ground as stated earlier. Also check the fuel sender. Mine was shorting out. The vibration over the years caused the wound coil to bend downward and touch the metal case that protects it. I pushed the coil back into position and I have a working gas gauge. Before I fixed it the gauge always spiked to "Full" when ever the ignition was on.
