Doesn't the original fan circuit have a fuse? I'd stick with that one if it was me, if only because you'd know where the fuse is, instead of forgetting that there's an in-line fuse somewhere in the rat's-nest of wiring behind the dash. The fan should draw less than 10 amps. 12 gauge wire is generally rated at 20 amps max. I know they go higher sometimes in low-voltage applications, but there's no need to here. 20 amps max on the fuse.
