The model A had a spark timing control on the steering column so you could retard the spark for starting. I'm not sure if the absence of a spark retard on the newer engines makes it harder to crank-start or not. I think the model A also had a buzzer type spark coil that provided a continual spark to whichever cylinder the distributor rotor was pointed at. That might have made it easier to start than a modern engine where you only get one spark per TDC.
