We used to "ventilate the side walls" to prevent air getting trapped, to later work it's way out and make the tire low. But that was to put a tube into a tubeless tire on a tubeless rim. Split ring rims leak enough that no ventilation is needed.
Me thinks that the difference between the ries was that tubeless had a more air-tight inner layer.
One supposed downside to running a tube is that radials will supposedly get warmer, and heat is a tires enemy.
But a gazillion of us that I know of are running Michelin radials with tubes. And there are a bazillion more running other brands, like Super Swampers?
