They were only used in converting vans to 4x4 as far as I know. I think the main "advantage" is it allows the vehicle height to stay similar to the same as when it was 2x4.

I have an E350 converted to 4x4 with a straight axle and leaf springs. The main cross-member is modified to allow for clearance with the differential, it is very close and the van is quite high. I have 255/85R16 on it and could easily fit 255/100R16(9.00-16 equivalent). Yet, it is as low as it could be with that cross-member and differential.
