Macs are great but they are different than PCs, and getting a little less intuitive because they have so many advanced features now......so my strong advice is to buy the "Missing Manual" by Pogue. Available online (Amazon) or most bookstores. It is very very helpful when you are trying to do stuff.
Try Skype if you have relatives you want to see and talk with for free!
If you have an Apple store nearby, they are very helpful and answer stuff for free and can fix many little problems you might have.
