Duane,
The problem is the two piece spark plugs freezing in the head. When one goes to change the plugs after the scheduled 100,000 miles the distal end of the plug may break from the outer portion. When this happens the heads must be removed to get at the retained portion of the plug.
The manufacturers have since made the plugs one piece...
