will old oil / cause an engine's exhaust to smell

haven't run the command car recently - since halloween. started right up but the exhaust smells more oily / gassy than normal. does old oil cause that smell. it was heavy enough to make my clothes absorb the smell. the oil is about a year old... gas is always kept almost empty and 5 gals added at a time to my renued tank. any thoughts?
