Silica is a carcinogen. Get a good respirator mask with changeable filters. Get a good full-face mask. You'll be able to reuse the sand twice, maybe three times before it becomes too fine. That's when it is most dangerous. Outside and upwind is safest. Disassemble as much as possible. Sand gets into every crevice and orifice. 80 grit is good. Black Beauty for cabinet. Lots of grease and dirt? Steam clean first.
