They have a gelled electrolyte, like the old Gates Gel-Cells, and some chemistry that recombines the surplus gasses for they're gently over-charged. Some guys swear by them. I'm to cheap to buy them. The obvious advantages are they can't leak if tipped at a severe angle and they won't get dirty river water in them if you ford a deep hole and your battery is mounted down low. They are not so tolerant of over-charging as a conventional flooded battery since you can't simply top up the electrolyte with distilled water, and of course you can't rejuvenate an almost-dead one by adding more acid to it like you can with a flooded battery. Most people never try to "doctor" a weak battery these days anyway, so maybe those last two advantages don't matter so much, but with the price of even an ordinary battery pushing $100 these days, I like to keep my options open and get every last possible bit of life out of it.
