there is still demand for asbestos in some applications as there is no good substitute. aerospace and high heat industrial assemblies often still use asbestos legally under permit etc. handled properly it is safe. when asbestos is used in a heat / friction use, it is way less dangerous than when it was blown into voids and wrapped around pipes for insulation. the asbestos is chemically bonded to and incorporated into friction facings and when it wears and forms dust, that dust is not fryable. the fryable type is what kills and causes asbestosis. asbestosis is a known carcinogen. mercury is a known carcinogen, the chemicals in alcohol and cigarettes are known carcinogens and recently, carbon dioxide was named a pollutant by the EPA! the difference between those items are that asbestos exposure can be traced back in someone's personal history and a offending producing company can be named and sued. i.e. - i was on the freighter ship "x" during ww2. ship x was built by the braintree ship works, and they bought their asbestos from the johns manville company. a link can be made and a paying defendant can be found and sued. mercury cases are harder to prove and its widespread use ended longer ago and the companies using it were smaller. hatters used to rub mercury on hats in the shaping / finishing process! cigarettes, alcohol and coming soon carbon dioxide, on the other hand produce much needed tax revenue for states and governments. billions of dollars come out of the cigarette business and accordingly people turn a blind eye to it. the govt forces cig companies to do awareness programs, it sues them, it maligns them - then takes their money in the back door. same with alcohol. its all perspective. in nyc there is a bed bug problem of epic proportions. ddt was banned and soon after the bed bugs came back. that same ddt that we banned in the states was banned in 3rd world countries too, as WE know best. malaria and other mosquito born diseases are again back to all time highs and some sources are beginning to concede that the hype over ddt was overblown...
its all too much to think about sometimes, but if you are creative, you can turn lemons into lemonade. if you are worried about asbestos and your safety, a nice way to be proactive is to use your concern to convince your spouse that you NEED those asbestos free helitool disc brakes!!! safe for you and the environment! Go green - call ray!
