... avoid using the winch on stump pulls and just hook to the pintel and drive the truck. Don't want to damage the winch, as you say, although the pintel will break too. Trouble is that in the desert there is often nothing in the way of "suitable anchors" to chain the truck to.
Last week I used the W-500 to pull some tiny insignificant little Ironwood weed about 6" in diameter, even had some rot in it, easy job. Stopped the (9,800 lb) truck cold, twice. Even spun the 19" duals a bit in the dirt. Got it on the third yank. These ain't pine trees, boys.
