Cable failures are benign? I've sure heard some horror stories of broken cables flying back and slicing through everything in their path. Cables stretch, which puts energy into them like a rubber band. I've never had a heavy chain break, but I can't imagine it being as bad as a cable breaking because it doesn't have much energy stored in it. Besides, I thought a Braden MU/LU winch was rated at 8000 lbs, not 10,000.
I'm with Jerry about the danger of getting a running start to give the stump a big yank. That's fine if the stump comes out, but I've sure seen a lot of trucks with creased bumpers which probably came from doing just that.
