In the latest Turbo diesel registry magazine (#71), there is a very nice pictorial essay on replacing the ball joints on a 2006 4X4 2500 truck around the age you mention.
He shows the tools needed and has tips on the process.
I believe he used Moog ball joints, which can be greased top an bottom.
