C.A. is real slippery wood. we used to use it for a slippery bed in the planer when we didn't want end snipes. Smith & Wesson used it for pistol grips.
But the missing bit of head gasket may have burned out, one fume at a time.
Last couple head jobs I did, I center punched a row of dimples down the line between the siamesed cylinders. Do the head, not the block, easier for subsequent clean up that way. The dimples raise a bit of a ring, ring grabe the gasket, keeps it from flexxing back and forth between cylinders.
If I'm lucky, I'll be doing it this week on another one.
