no rope seal. it is a 2 piece deal that bolts to back of engine. the oil slinger does 95 % of the work. the only reason they added the seal as an after thought was for when you are acending extremely steep grades oil could get passed the oil slinger. it is a great design for its era. it doesn't leak because they just dont leak! were not talking chevies here ;/)
