If you are committed to the 6bt, and even considering using a late model frame, rather than doghouse the cab, consider lengthening the hood. The sheetmetal work required to fabricate a longer hood shouldn't be too hard.
The '96 Dodge is a good drivetrain. I'm fond of the older leaf spring front ends. myself.
There was a Carryall put on a 24-valve chassis in Texas. It was a horrible looking machine after they widened the grill to accomodate the intercooler.
Bob in Illinois did a nice job routing intercooler tubes under the front fenders when he put a 12v in his 6x6 Power Wagon road tractor.
