If it's a 6 volt regulator on a 12 volt battery, you'd be getting no juice out of the generator. On the other hand a 12 volt regulator will make a "6 volt" generator put out 12 volts. I have that setup on one of my trucks and it works fine. It's not as efficient as using the proper generator, but it's good enough on that truck.
I have a sneaking suspicion that with those handy adjustment knobs, some previous owner has not-too-handily adjusted them.
