Square PTO driveshaft?

Am putting a new (to me) winch on the 49 PW and was supplied with a square drive shaft with u-joints on either end. Only problem is the shaft seems to be 6" too long between the PTO and winch.

Any idea what the shaft came from? M-37? Would you cut the shaft and use it?
