You probably got a pretty good deal. I paid 800 clams for my 1st3 PW and it was basicly a rolling chassis with front sheet metal, no cab, and a bad frame. I had the motor rebuilt by a "Professional" which I will never do again (It's easy to do yourself) and that set me back another $2100, I found a correct cab for $300 and it cost me $1200 to get most of the dents out and have it primered. That's after sandblasting costs. I got a great deal on a bed for $300 that will probably cost me another $1000 to get perfectly finished. Tires and tubes? Probably another $1000. That's what??, $6700 or so withiut paint and a winch. So You got a running PW for $500? Yea, you got a pretty good deal!
But be prepared to spend some money to get it fixed the way you want it. I must admit now I would have offered a lot less for the rolling chassis than I did before. But you can also see that when a Fellow pays between 15k and 25k for a very nice truck that it's not that far off either in fact it's probably right on. I've found Power Wagons are a lot like Harley Davidsons are. You can buy one off the showroom floor for 18 to 20k, then you will probably spend another 2 to 3k in custom add on's. Where as you can buy your own frame and motor and build the bike exactly the way you want it for about the same price + or - a few $. If you buy a PW that's almost a parts truck, you can see where I'm going with this. One thing to note, I would never take a original PW in good shape and do a lot of modifications to it, there are just too few of them left. But if you have a builder as you say, you have endless options in which you can do things to it, ie.. 318 or diesel conversion (as long as it's a nicely done and clean job!!) add disc brakes and taller gears or even different axles all together.
Just my ramblings though!!
