I'd vote for brazing the oil pan too, but the tin shops solder sheet iron all the time (or at least used to, before everybody got scared of lead). They even used to solder roofing tin (terne plate). I've had good luck on bare steel and galvanized using zinc chloride (stronger) or ammonium chloride flux.
