Catilatic Converter on a 78 PW

I finaly got my 78 PW hooked up to the smoge machine at school. Boy my teacher was impressed on how much raw gas a 440 could throw out of it! It came out at 700 something after tuneing the carb. All I know is I have to get it somewere arounf 200! Im going to check to see if the catilatic converter is still working but how? I dont want to replace it at around $200, I dont even want to call an auto shop to see how much. Should i throw some of my moms jewelry in it to see if it helps? Haha
