You probably already know this, but I will offer this information anyway, just in case:
Make sure you are removing the pins from the bottom of the spring stack. Each pin has a head, much like the head of a bolt, and this fits into a recess in the axle housing spring pad, underneath the bottom leaf.
One of the pins on my '49 was broken off about 2 or 3 springs down from the top leaf, and it came out without any trouble, once I managed to get the u-bolts loose from the springs and axle.
I ended up using a grade 8 bolt in its place, after using a grinding wheel to round off the bolt's hex head to fit into the recess. So far, I've had no trouble with it.
